Week Seven Review: One Best Thing
One Best Thing is a series of iBook’s created by Apple Distinguished Educators. These books are created to help teachers become more successful.
The One Best Thing iBook I chose was Just-Right Books at Their Fingertips: Authoring for Primary Readers by Kristi Meeuwse. Dr. Meeuwse is an early childhood educator who teaches kindergarten in a 1:1 iPad classroom and has a blog called iTeach with iPads. She is also a National Board Certified teacher and an Apple Distinguished Educator.
Dr. Meeuwse uses iBooks Author for Mac to write informational text for her students. She decided to use iBooks when she realized accomplishing the goal set by Common Core to have the students text they read be at least 50% informational text is difficult under already existing circumstances. This was hard to accomplish because there is not much informational text available for emergent readers. All of Dr. Meeuwse's students are now meeting this goal and are reading at or above grade level due to the informational texts she has created. She creates these texts in three simple steps: First she picks the theme she will write about, then she picks out the content she will include and lastly she writes the text and puts it into the template on iBooks Author. Dr. Meeuwse has created a leveled book collection containing all of her informational texts. This collection helps the students choose a book that is at a reading level that they are able to comprehend. When the students are able to comprehend the information they are reading, they are able to learn and retain the information better, accomplishing Dr. Meeuwse’s original goal.
